Are Corporate Wellness programs BS?
The NSW Government recently released some data from a National Health Survey 2017-18 and the following has been released.
- 14% smoke tobacco daily - 92% have inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables - 35% of workers don’t do enough physical activity - 67% are overweight or obese - 16% consume more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day - 20% of Australians have been diagnosed with a mental or behavioural condition
Needless to say that stress related mental health conditions cost Australian businesses up to $10.9 billion each year.
We spend a large portion of days at work and it only seems fitting that companies are starting to identify the need for wellness program to benefit the psychological and physical welfare of their employees.
Global research has found that when employee health and wellness is managed well, the percentage of engaged employees increases from 7% to 55%.
So maybe terms, like reduce sick leave, improve morale, motivation and teamwork, improve engagement and retention and increase job satisfaction, are not BS after all.
One things for certain, the old way of thinking in getting the most out of your employees till they drop is long gone.
